They lie along Ireland’s western and northern coastline like treasures from a shipwreck quietly washed ashore. Golf links inspiring deep local pride, they haven’t yet achieved the renown of Atlantic-shore neighbors Lahinch and Ballybunion. Be advised, however: Strategically and aesthetically they rival the top seaside courses of any other nation.

Introduce yourself to the bumpy, bristled and wave-washed linksland of Clare, Mayo, Donegal and Sligo, Irish counties where, mile upon mile, the scenic power of the landscape outdoes a visitor’s capacity to savor it. Reading these pages, you will likely find yourself reaching for a map to plot your way onto the fescue fairways depicted. Some of the mileage shown on that map will be along “dual carriageways” (Irish for divided highways), but much of it is over ribbony roads that first did duty as herdsmen’s lanes. Travelers of today will find them still framed by smooth, green, sheep-speckled hillsides.

The Honda Classic – which starts Thursday as the first event of the Florida swing on the PGA Tour – brings a more storied history than many golf fans may realize.

Just in the past 10 years, it’s been won by major champions Todd Hamilton, Ernie Els, Padraig Harrington, Y.E. Yang, and of course last year’s champion, Rory McIlroy.

Prior to that, its trophy has featured the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Curtis Strange, Fred Couples and Vijay Singh. And its first two champions, back in the days when Jackie Gleason hosted it, were Tom Weiskopf and Lee Trevino, back in 1972 and 1973.

Tiger Woods came close a year ago, firing a final round 62 that nearly caught McIlroy. Woods eventually tied for second with Tom Gillis.

The field has gotten even more of a recent push by the redesign of the golf course by Nicklaus and his design group.

As golf technology continues to improve, manufacturers continue to make incredible advances in their product lines. After the PGA Merchandise Show and seeing new releases from a handful of club manufacturers, we can confidently say that 2013 will be another great year. Your local GolfTEC will have many of these clubs available soon for you to demo.

We asked three experts who have three different perspectives on golf merchandise what clubs are on their list to play and to test this year. And just like last year, there is a huge variety in the clubs they chose knowing one size never fits all.

2013 Hot List Equipment Guide: Category Leaders Golf Equipment:

You wouldn’t think it possible for a commissioner of a sports organization who does not represent money-grubbing owners to be more supercilious than the NHL’s Gary Bettman, more holier-than-thou than the NFL’s Roger Goodell, more boring than baseball’s Bud Selig.

But somehow, without even really trying, Tim Finchem manages the trifecta.

Maybe it’s because the old political tub-thumper from Jimmy Carter days speaks in rambling, wordy lawyer-ese. Maybe it’s because he’s so button-down bankerly, he looks like the football coach of whom a colleague once said: “You couldn’t drive an inflation pin up his butt with a jackhammer.”

But more than likely, it’s all of the above, plus the fact that he represents money-grubbing players who, on the PGA Tour, are the de facto owners. So maybe it’s not so different, after all.

What’s best for the game of golf, among such a self-interested, venal group, is not even a…
